Should I Consider Getting a Rapid Flu Test?
In the age of COVID-19, the flu became less of a threat. Necessary social distancing and other health-safety precautions dramatically cut down on flu cases around the globe, but it’s still possible to get the virus! If you start experiencing symptoms, is a COVID-19 test the only one you should get, or should you get a flu test first?
Our AFC Urgent Care Sevierville team has some answers, so read on!
How Can I Tell the Difference Between COVID-19 and the Flu?
The flu and the coronavirus share similar symptoms, but they also share some key differences. Typically, unlike COVID-19, flu symptoms come on suddenly, and they come on hard. A fever is a tell-tale sign of the flu and, although it does happen in many cases, it isn’t quite as consistent of a COVID-19 symptom.
An additional defining factor of the flu is that the flu doesn’t usually cause as many serious illnesses as COVID-19. We’ve listed some more common symptoms of the flu below.
Common Flu Symptoms
- Fever or feeling feverish/chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headaches
- Physical fatigue
So Should I Get a Rapid Flu Test?
If you’re experiencing symptoms of the flu, it’s a good idea to be tested. Your doctor may also suggest testing for COVID-19, since many symptoms overlap between the two conditions.
Additionally, now that masks are coming off and more people are out and about, respiratory illnesses, like the flu, strep throat and COVID-19, are all a threat.
