How Can I Prioritize My Health Over the Holidays?
The holiday season is a special time of year in the Smokies, and we are so grateful to live and work here, especially now! While we all make plans to visit family and attend social gatherings, staying healthy becomes even more important so you don’t miss out on all the fun to be had.
Infections can pop up seemingly out of nowhere and impact not only you but your entire family in just a few days.
We don’t want that to happen to you! Our AFC Urgent Care Sevierville team explains more below about how to stay healthy over the holidays.
How Can I Avoid Infections?
While you can’t completely avoid your exposure to infections, you can reduce your risk of getting sick when exposed to them. Get your flu shot early in the season, manage your stress levels and take care of your body. Eat well, exercise regularly and do your best to get more sleep.
Since infections tend to spread through large crowds or wherever people are spending more time closer together, consider limiting your time spent at large gatherings. It may not seem like much, but all of these simple steps work together to give your immune system the power it needs to fight off infections as you become exposed to them.
Tips for a Healthy Holiday Season
- Bundle up when it is cold outside.
- Get your flu vaccine.
- Limit alcohol consumption.
- Wear your seatbelt while traveling.
What Spreads Foodborne Illnesses?
Foodborne illnesses is another category of illness that tends to increase a little during the holiday season. Any time food is prepared and then left to sit on a counter or table top for a while, the risk of bacterial growth increases. If you are in charge of making the meal for your family gathering, wash your hands often and be sure to cook all meat to its recommended temperature.
Once the food is ready, serve it immediately and then store leftovers as soon as everyone is finished. Clean up your work surface and wash your hands one final time. If you accidentally forget food on the counter and it has been over two hours since it was set out, it is best to err on the side of caution and toss it.
Keeping a Safe Kitchen
- Use designated cutting boards for raw meat and produce.
- Wash hands before handling food.
- Don’t cook for others when you aren’t feeling well.
- Understand specific allergies or dietary restrictions for those attending your party.
We wish you a safe and happy holiday season! Come see us at AFC Urgent Care Sevierville if you aren’t feeling well.
